We have evacuated or supported the evacuation of over 750 people from the territory of Ukraine. More than half of them were people with disabilities.
The first evacuation initiatives were to a great extent supported by KIK volunteers. KIK was responsible for arranging transport and accommodation for each group. One of the most difficult endeavours included evacuating 140 residents of a centre for persons with disabilities in Bila Tserkva near Kyiv. In one of Warsaw’s warehouse halls, KIK organised a comprehensive respite point. After an over 20-hour journey, children were fed, examined by doctors, provided with clothes and taken care of by KIK volunteers.
Over time, we obtained the support of the national administration in further evacuation actions. For example, we were provided assistance by the First Lady, Agata Kornhauser-Duda, who helped to transport one of the evacuated groups to Germany by military aircraft. We located the evacuated groups in shelters in Koblenz and Ursberg, Germany.
